Amur Leopard & Amur Tiger Photography Expedition - Russia

The Russian Far East is home to over 90% of the world’s remaining Amur Leopards and one of the strongest populations of wild Amur Tigers. Winter is the most effective season for photography, with snow revealing fresh tracks, predictable movement corridors, and cleaner sightlines inside dense forests. These protected landscapes represent the last realistic opportunity on Earth to photograph both species in the wild within a single expedition.

Join one of the world’s most exclusive Amur Leopard & Amur Tiger Photography Expeditions in the remote Russian Far East. This 13-day winter expedition is designed specifically for photographers seeking ethical, close-range opportunities to photograph the critically endangered Amur Leopard and the majestic Amur Tiger in their last stronghold on Earth. With access to protected reserves, professional photo hides, and expert trackers, this journey prioritizes time, patience, and positioning over conventional wildlife tourism.

Operating in Leopard Land National Park, Zov Tigra National Park, and the coastal landscapes of Lazovsky, this expedition offers a rare combination of forest hides, tiger tracking, taiga wilderness, and coastal exploration—making it one of the most comprehensive big-cat photography experiences globally.

Expedition Focus & Field Experience

This expedition combines long-duration photo-hide sessions with active tracking and forest exploration, allowing photographers to adapt to animal movement rather than follow fixed schedules.

A typical experience includes:

  • Extended hours inside professional photo hides in Leopard Land
  • Tiger tracking drives and forest walks in Zov Tigra National Park
  • Coastal exploration of Zarya & Proselochnaya Bays for wildlife signs
  • Low-impact, ethical photography with ranger and tracker support
  • Flexible field strategy based on fresh tracks, weather, and movement patterns

The itinerary is deliberately balanced to maximize opportunities while allowing rest and recovery during demanding winter conditions.

Why This Expedition Is Different

  • Exclusive Photo Hide Access

Leopard Land’s specially designed photography hides are built for professionals, offering eye-level angles, stable platforms, and controlled distances—dramatically increasing the probability of meaningful encounters.

  • Multi-Reserve Access

Unlike standard tours limited to one park, this expedition covers three protected regions, increasing species diversity and photographic variety.

  • Small Group Advantage

With only 6 participants + skipper, field time is maximized, movement is flexible, and ethical spacing inside hides is maintained.

  • Winter-Specific Strategy

Snow conditions improve tracking accuracy, subject visibility, and storytelling opportunities unavailable in warmer seasons.

  • Forest guesthouses & cabins near Leopard Land
  • Cozy winter cottages in Lazovsky region (with sauna)

Detailed Itinerary (13 Days)

Day 1: Arrival in Vladivostok → Leopard Land National Park

Arrive in Vladivostok and meet the expedition team for your transfer to the forest guest house near Leopard Land National Park in the Khasan area. On arrival, settle into your accommodation or—time permitting—proceed directly to your first hide to begin observing the region’s wildlife. Evening orientation will set expectations for the days ahead, with a focus on maximizing opportunities with the elusive Amur Leopard and other taiga species.

Days 2–6: Leopard Land National Park — Photo Hide Experience

Over the next six days, you will have access to one of the professional photo hides constructed under the guidance of experienced photographers and reserve rangers. These hides are strategically positioned in known wildlife corridors, and spending extended periods inside them increases your chances of witnessing both Amur Leopards and Amur Tigers in winter habitats. Other species you may encounter include sika deer, roe deer, wapiti, musk deer, wild boar, Amur cat, Siberian weasel, and numerous bird species.

Participants are encouraged to minimize movements during hide sessions to avoid disturbance and maximize photographic windows. Meals and supplies are regularly brought to the hides, and communication with base camp is maintained via radio.

Day 7 (Evening): Transfer to Lazovsky Reserve

After your final hide session, return to the guesthouse to freshen up before embarking on a 5–6-hour drive to the Lazovsky area. This region serves as a wildlife corridor between Lazovsky Reserve and Zov Tigra National Park, with a strong presence of Amur Tigers and other mammals. Overnight is spent in a rustic wooden cottage featuring a traditional Russian banya (sauna) and hearty, locally inspired meals.

Day 8: Explore Zarya & Proselochnaya Bays

Today’s focus is on the stunning coastal landscapes of Zarya Bay and Proselochnaya Bay. Accompanied by reserve guides, you will explore pristine sea cliffs, walk scenic shorelines, and investigate fresh tiger tracks along the coastline. The incredible rock formations and dramatic viewpoints provide diverse photographic opportunities. Sightings of marine life such as spotted seals can occur from the shore when conditions allow.

Days 9–11: Zov Tigra National Park — Core Tiger Territory

Over these three days, you will venture into Zov Tigra National Park, one of the strongest natural strongholds for wild Amur Tigers in the Russian Far East. Forest drives and field safaris through prime tiger habitat increase the likelihood of sightings in open winter terrain—where tigers often follow roads and trails. Overnight stays are in winter cabins deep within the taiga, providing authentic wilderness immersion.

Day 12: Return to Vladivostok — City Walk & Farewell Dinner

After breakfast and a final morning forest safari, begin your return trip to Vladivostok (approximately a 5-hour drive). Upon arrival, you will check into a comfortable 4-star hotel. The evening includes a farewell dinner at one of Vladivostok’s top restaurants, offering an opportunity to reflect on your expedition experiences and share highlights with fellow participants.

Day 13: Departure from Vladivostok

After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport for your departure. If time allows before your flight, an optional city tour can be arranged to visit iconic local sights such as the Golden Bridge, Russky Island, or the Vladivostok Submarine Museum.

Preparation & Essentials for the Expedition

Winter expeditions in the Russian Far East require careful preparation and appropriate cold-weather gear. During January, temperatures in Leopard Land, Lazovsky, and Zov Tigra National Park typically range between –10°C to –30°C, with colder windchill in forest interiors, coastal zones, and open tracks. Extended time in photo hides, forest drives, and tracking on snow demands reliable insulation and personal comfort.

This expedition is suitable for most participants with a reasonable level of fitness. Guests should be comfortable with walking on snow-covered terrain, climbing in and out of vehicles, accessing hides, and spending long hours in hides while remaining patient and still during wildlife encounters.

Recommended Photography Equipment

  • Super-telephoto lenses: 400mm / 500mm / 600mm for distant and elusive big cats
  • Secondary lens: 70–200mm for closer encounters, behavior, and environmental frames

  • Sturdy tripod or monopod (cold-resistant locks preferred)
  • Extra camera batteries (cold drains power quickly)
  • High-capacity memory cards and backup storage
  • Power banks and chargers suitable for sub-zero use
  • Binoculars for scanning forest edges and tracking movement
  • Camera rain / snow covers to protect gear from moisture and snowfall
