Hidden deep within the rugged valleys of Drass, Western Ladakh, in India — the second coldest inhabited place in the world — lies one of the Himalayas’ most elusive and awe-inspiring mammals: the Himalayan Brown Bear, also known as Dzu-Teh, and locally called Drenmo, the creature often linked with the legend of the Yeti.

This rare subspecies of the Brown Bear is highly endangered and confined to a few remote pockets of the Himalayas and Hindu Kush. These majestic omnivores hibernate for a short duration during winter. From our experience, the best opportunities for close-up photographs come before and after the hibernation period, which is why our expedition is carefully timed for those months. Participants will also have the rare chance to photograph these magnificent bears against pristine white snow, creating some of the most striking wildlife portraits from the Himalayas.

Wild Wonders Expeditions is proud to be the pioneer in organizing dedicated Himalayan Brown Bear Photography Expeditions in Drass. For over seven years, our expert team — working with local trackers, camera traps, and field scanners — has achieved an unmatched 100% sighting success rate, providing participants with unforgettable encounters and award-winning photographic opportunities.

This expedition is designed for photographers of all levels as well as families and nature enthusiasts, offering comfort, warmth, and authentic Ladakhi hospitality amidst the wilderness. Stay in cozy lodges and homestays with heated rooms, attached bathrooms with geysers, and enjoy freshly prepared Indian and Kashmiri cuisine after a rewarding day in the field. As a complimentary, you will also get the chance to visit some of the renowned and popular local sights with the guidance of our team.

Join us for an unforgettable experience — where science meets legend — and capture the mythical Himalayan Brown Bear, the true guardian of the Himalayas.

Preparation & Essentials for the Expedition

Drass — known as the coldest inhabited place in India — experiences a unique, altitude-influenced Mediterranean continental climate. During the months of our Himalayan Brown Bear Expedition (pre- and post-hibernation), the temperature typically remains below subzero, often touching -15°C to -20°C, especially during early mornings and late evenings.

The expedition is designed to be comfortable for most participants, but a reasonable level of fitness is recommended. To track and scan for wildlife, moderate walking may occasionally be required to reach vantage points or areas where bears and other species have been sighted. Since Drass lies at an altitude of approximately 11,000 feet, basic acclimatization and good physical readiness will help participants enjoy the experience comfortably.

Recommended Photography Equipment

  • Telephoto lenses preferably 600mm or 800mm for detailed close-up wildlife shots;
